I was trying to understand why the nephew of my G-G-G-G grandmother claimed to be a veteran of the Kentucky 22nd Volunteer Infantry (Company D), when he was not listed in the muster list available various places. Clues were there, but not a definitive answer. The pension file that I sourced through Gopher Records answered the question. He had signed on as a Lieutenant in the Company, but had resigned when his house was destroyed by Morgan’s forces, and he had to go home to deal with it. This occurred before the company was mustered into service. So he ended up on the list of officers in the company, but not in the official muster list. He then volunteered as a Provost Martial.
