I wrote the NARA personally. I filled out their paperwork and waited 3 months for a reply which was "there is nothing available on this individual". I was certain that my 3rd great grandfather had fought in the War of 1812. Family stories were very strong on his behalf but I had no documentation to prove. I was trying to understand why the nephew of my G-G-G-G grandmother claimed to be a veteran of the Kentucky 22nd Volunteer Infantry (Company D), when he was not listed in the muster list available various places. Found out about this service from fellow Facebook poster. I've done it both ways - NARA and Gopher Records. Either one does the job, but NARA is much slower, and much more expensive. For about the cost of a NARA pension file, Gopher will provide a "bundle", that includes the Pension, Service and Medical Card records (where available for your ancestor) - scanned and downloaded, rather than through the mail. Highly recommended!
