My great-mother was married to a soldier in the 1st United States Colored Heavy Artillery. He died of smallpox in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1866, before being discharged. It was remarkable to read my great grandmother’s own words in her deposition. Since then I have taken an interest in the entire regiment. The Pension records provide an invaluable source of information.
