After waiting 2 1/2 years for any response from the National Archives I found out about Gopher Records as a means to attain these records. In only 5 days I had the medical, enlistment and pension records for my great great grandfather. Amazing. I belong to a DNA group at my local genealogy library and at our monthly meeting I told everyone about the great service I received from Gopher and highly recommended that if anyone needed any of this type of records to be sure to contact them. I am highly satisfied.

I've been ordering information from NARA for decades. I'm used to waiting for months to find out whether they have anything beyond an index card, and then getting faded images that are next to impossible to read. I get it -- the clerks are just doing a job. They don't understand the passionate curiosity I have for the contents of those old records. I was impressed with the quick turnaround (just over a week) and the clear quality of the documents provided. In my case, I was sorting out two couples in TN with the same names (well, Eliza for one and Elizabeth for the other, but possibly same woman) and one of the men had a Civil War pension file. I've been trying to find information about an ancestor of mine who served in the Civil War. He seems to have been in trouble several times and might have been court martialed at some point. I couldn't find any information on my own. I reached out to Gopher Records to see if they could help. They weren't able to find any court martial records (no charge for that).
